The Fort at Vijfhuizen consists of a main building, which is connected by means of a bombproof connecting passage, a poterne, with the front fort. A sturdy space with a floor still made of bricks. Perfect for a nice dinner at long tables.

A poterne is a secondary gate in a fort or fortress. A poterne often functions as a secret access or exit gate, but can also provide an internal connection to other parts of the fortification.

The Poterne, once an important part of the Fort's defense line, was used as a passage and storage space for military purposes. In times of war, this space provided protection and strategic advantage.
