Architectural marvel in a prime location
This neo-Gothic cross basilica was designed by the famous master builder Pierre Cuypers and named after the poet Joost van den Vondel. Cuypers – the architect of, among others, the Central Station, the Rijksmuseum, and dozens of churches throughout the Netherlands – developed the Vondelstraat as a project developer. He considered the Vondelkerk to be his most beautiful church, not only in terms of architecture but also because of the ideal position of this church in the midst of the Vondelstraat community, for which he designed the houses. It says enough that after completing the street, he moved into one of the houses overlooking the Vondelkerk.

Choose heritage
The Vondelkerk dates back to 1872 and was long a well-visited church, also known as the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, named after the Catholic parish that preached there. About a hundred years later, due to secularization, demolition threatened the now severely neglected building. A repurposing plan is being developed. A foundation established in 1980 has made restoration and new use possible, allowing this beautiful structure to remain standing to this day. Part of the repurposing plan of Stadsherstel involves setting up sections of the church as office space. The enchanting central space is available for rentals.
